Writing your first admission letter might feel like climbing Everest. It can make or break your chances of getting into your dream program.
But that's not bad news! With a great written cover letter (I use that interchangeably to the admission letter) you can easily stand out among other candidates. Let me show you a simple framework I usually follow when helping others.
Again, disclaimer here that you should follow the guidelines of the university you apply to (if provided).
Start with your details:
Example:
John Doe
123 Main St.
City, State, ZIP
john.doe@gmail.com
(123) 456-7890
February 32, 3024
Start with a formal greeting (if you know the person's name, even better):
Dear [Admissions Officer's Name/Admissions Committee],
State your intention clearly:
I am honored to submit my application for the BSc in Bioengineering at University ABC for the upcoming 2025/26 year .
Now, we got through the previous steps quite quickly as they are the easiest ones. The body part is tricky. This is where hair-pulling might start. Why? Because after high school you might not have that much to show. That's why I recommend listing EVERYTHING you've ever done or were involved in. It's mostly to show your interests and that you will be an active member of the university's community.
Let's break it down.
Briefly introduce yourself and your academic achievements:
During my time at Best High School Ever, I have maintained a GPA of 4.9/5 and excelled in Biology and Informatics. This led me to join extracurricular activities in the Bioengineering Club where in a team of 4 we built a working prototype of an EMG controlled gripper.
Explain why you're choosing this program and university (show your research!):
My passion for Bioengineering and the university's strong emphasis on combining lab work with theoretical aspects make University ABC my top choice.
Showcase your extracurricular achievements:
Beside Bioengineering Club I have actively participated in voluntary work as a Maths tutor for underprivileged children. Thanks to joint efforts, we could improve the outcomes for children on tests by 30 percentage points. This experience taught the importance of clear articulation of thoughts, concepts as well as the value of positive reinforcement in education and working with others.
Tie your goals to the program:
After university I aim to lead the research in the lab, and believe that University ABC, especially involvement in the Bioengineering Freaks Association and course on Synthetic Biology Lab will help me achieve these aspirations.
Wrap it up with gratitude and eagerness:
Thank you for considering my application. I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to contribute to University ABC and look forward to discussing my application further.

Sincerely,
[Your Full Name]
That's all. I know this task seems overwhelming (even writing this article gave me some flashbacks). But I hope this guide will help you with your admission letter. You can always get more assistance clicking on the button in the top right corner! :) Good luck!
